In een voortdurende zoektocht naar het uitdiepen van mijn moderne Zwarte identiteit als eerste generatie Surinaamse Nederlander, heb ik mij sinds mijn afstuderen intensief verdiept in het erfgoed van de Surinaamse klederdracht. “Why is it that there is no typical outfit for the Afro-Surinamese man, as exists for the Afro-Surinamese woman, namely the koto? In an ongoing quest to delve further into my modern Black identity as a first-generation Surinamese Dutch person, since my graduation I’ve intensively studied the heritage of traditional costume from Suriname. This work is a speculative outfit for the Afro-Surinamese man. Like the “feminine” koto, these koto trousers are completely hand-starched with goma made from tapioca.” - Denzel Veerkamp
